UPDATE: “If things work out, everything structurally (with the contact), it will be Sacramento,’’ Dalembert said in a phone interview with FOX Sports Florida from his Boca Raton, Fla., home. “It’s close.’’
Dalembert, 31, anticipates it will a “one- or two-year deal’’ with the Kings, and that he hopes to firm up negotiations Wednesday. He said getting one year with a player option is a possibility.
The Sacramento Kings voided Chuck Hayes‘ $21.3 million, four-year contract Monday, saying the forward-center failed a physical that forced his release.
Kings general manager Geoff Petrie said in a statement Monday that informing Hayes his deal had been voided was “one of the most heartbreaking moments of my professional or personal life.” He said Hayes asked the team to refrain from any further comment.
The move came four days after the Kings announced that an echo stress test performed on Hayes, 28, revealed a heart abnormality. He had not practiced or played with them since that announcement.
“We’re not going to be able to replace him,” Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie told The Sacramento Bee on Monday afternoon. “He was one of the best defensive frontcourt players in the league and a really unique player we thought would facilitate some offense.”We’ll take a look at what we can do, but it’s not going to be the same.”
Monday evening, Hayes posted to his Twitter account, “Thank you everyone for your prayers and support, taking the next step to get healthy and back on the court, much love.”
Seeking Samuel: Asked about the possibility of bringing back center Samuel Dalembert, Petrie said: “We’ve stayed in touch with him periodically along the way. We’ll see what develops here in the next few days and go from there.”
